I was born an animal lover, so it was no surprise to my parents when I requested to be enrolled in 4-H at age nine, then went on to "beg" for a show dog at the age of thirteen. My first Golden Retriever was named Sunshine's Golden Velvet (Sugar). She became my best friend, my Junior Showmanship dog, and the producer of my first Champion. "Sunshine" Golden Retrievers was a dream that became reality in 1970.

Starting young has helped to develop an incredibly complex and far-reaching breeding program. From my first home-bred Champion, ("Champion Sunshine's Golden Tomorrows CD WC OS SDHOF"), who went on to earn "Top Ten" status in 1974, to today's dogs that are the by-product of years of reseach and line-breeding, we have never faltered in our dedication to this marvelous breed of dog.

At this point I should mention that after majoring in Animal Science at Chico State University, then returning home due to my mother's illness in 1977, I met and married Jim Berry. Sunshine Golden Retrievers became a joint effort and the dream of two people -- double the dedication!

We have either bred or co-bred well over fifty conformation champions, dozens of obedience titled dogs, WC/WCX and hunt test titled dogs, assistance dogs, state certified search & rescue dogs and over twenty dogs that are "multi-titled". Presently many of the dogs bred by us are competing in agility trials and doing tracking tests. We are annually ranked in the top ten breeders in the United States (determined by # of champions produced) and we were proud to be ranked #1 in 1995.

The foundation for our present breeding program was a puppy we purchased in 1977. This puppy's name was "Rebel", who went on to become Ch Beaumaris Sunshine Scotsman CD OS. Rebel's parents were imported from England by John and Anne Bissette of Beaumaris Golden Retrievers. Anne has been a mentor and dear friend for over twenty years now. We have incorporated other lines and made necessary decisions in regard to our breeding program since then, but all of our current breedings still trace their history to this single dog!

In 1999 we were excited and proud to announce that Sunshine Golden Retrievers had become a "Team". Our long-standing supporter and best friend "Tom Burton" became our partner. In the new millenium, Sunshine Goldens is represented by Jim Berry, Debbie Berry and Tom Burton.
